Tough Saturday in Portugal for Biesiekirski

06/11/2021

After a solid Friday, Saturday didn’t go according to the plan for the only Pole on the grid of the Moto2 World Championship. Piotr Biesiekirski will start tomorrow’s Algarve Grand Prix from the last, 31stposition on the grid.

Having made good progress throughout the Friday’s first two practice sessions at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, the rider of the Pertamina Mandalika SAG Euvic Team was looking to improve further during the Saturday but suffered a small crash halfway through today’s morning session.

The 20-year-old was then looking to make up the lost time during the 15-minute qualifying but lost five minutes due to a fluid leak midway through the grid deciding session, eventually completing just three timed laps, instead of seven. Tomorrow’s Moto2 race will start at 3:30 PM CET.

“I’m pretty disappointed as we were looking for a strong Saturday after a good start to the weekend yesterday but today things just didn’t go our way – says Piotr Biesiekirski. – We haven’t had the best of starts to the day this morning but when I returned to the track halfway into the session I was feeling pretty good on the bike. I posted my personal best times in the first three sectors on my first timed lap out of the box but lost the front going into the final left corner. The tyre wasn’t fully up to temperature and lost grip while I was still completely upright. I was looking forward to the qualifying but had to come back to the box after two laps due to some fluid leak. The team did a great job getting me back out quickly, but I only had time for one more flying lap. There wasn’t enough time to warm up the tyres again or try to find a tow so even though I had managed to post my fastest time of the weekend it wasn’t a true reflection of our potential. However, the most important part of the weekend, the race, is still ahead of us, so I remain positive ahead of Sunday”.
