Biesiekirski fifth in Portugal

26/04/2021

Piotr Biesiekirski started the 2021 European Moto2 season by matching his career best, fifth place finish in the first race in Estoril.

The 19-year-old from Poland qualified in sixth for the Portuguese double header, his first event with his new team, the Pertamina Mandalika SAG Stylobike Euvic squad.

Race one saw the Pole battling in out for fourth position from start to finish, crossing the line in fifth, just two tenths of a second from fourth, and matching his career best European Moto2 result.

The youngster was again battling for fourth position in race two when he lost the front and low-sided in turn three on lap eight. However he was able to post the fourth fastest lap time of the race including fastest times in the first two sectors.

After the first two of 11 races Biesiekirski is tenth in the overall standings with 11 points to his name. Round two of the European Moto2 Championship will take place in two weeks time in Valencia, where the grid will take part in just a single race.

“While I was hoping for more than a fifth place when it comes to the final result, I’m really happy with my rhythm in both races – says Piotr Biesiekirski. – The pace in race one wasn’t very high because we were battling really hard but I felt good on the bike and just missed out on fourth position. In race two I felt even better and quickly made my way up to fifth, posting the fourth fastest lap time and two fastest sector times along the way. I was able to keep that pace and was hoping for a strong finish, but unfortunately lost the front on lap eight. Despite the crash I’m really happy with my pace and can’t wait for the next round in Valencia”.
